The Cube is an office building in Eschborn that is used by the Deutsche Börse Group (Deutsche Börse AG – lit. the German Stock Exchange operator). With a height of 87.4 meters (287 feet), it is one of the tallest office buildings in the Eschborn South Area. The building bears its name for a good reason: The Cube Eschborn looks like a gigantic cube.
In 2008, Groß & Partner and Lang & Cie won the competition to build the new Deutsche Börse building at Mergenthaler Allee 61–71 in Eschborn. When it was erected, this “green building” was one of the most energy-efficient and resource-saving buildings in Germany. Groß & Partner decided to go for an energy consumption rate 30% below the Energy Saving Ordinance for creating a low-energy house.
The foundation stone for the headquarters of Deutsche Börse was laid in autumn 2008. The Cube Eschborn was completed in 2010 and follows an ecological concept. These include, for example, energy-saving systems for heat recovery, the generation of cold by means of combined heat, power and cold, and the use of solar energy. Resource-saving and environmentally friendly materials were primarily used for the building materials.
The design of the 20-storey building with the shape of a cube comes from the architects KSP Engel & Zimmermann GmbH (today KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten GmbH). A total of around 2,500 office workplaces were created on a gross floor area of around 53,000 square meters (570,487 square feet). In addition to Deutsche Börse AG, the subsidiaries Eurex, Eurex Clearing, Clearstream Banking AG and Qontigo are also located in Eschborn.
A block-type thermal power station that can be converted from natural gas to biogas and generates electricity from the residual heat ensures that primary energy consumption is below 100 kWh/square meter per year in the long term. So the property can continue to be operated as a low-energy house of the latest generation.
