What is the Frankfurt City Region?

The Frankfurt City Region is an accumulation of cities and counties around the city of Frankfurt (Germany). It is organized by the Regional Authority FrankfurtRheinMain. According to the harmonized terms used by the Statistical Office of the European Union, the city region “DE005C Frankfurt am Main” is one of 323 “Functional Urban Areas” in the European Union.

The functionally delimited urban area of the city region comprises the following administrative units:

  • City of Frankfurt am Main (F)
  • City of Offenbach am Main (OF)
  • Main-Taunus-Kreis County (MTK)
  • Hochtaunuskreis County (HG)
  • Wetteraukreis County (FB)
  • Main-Kinzig-Kreis County (MKK)
  • Kreis Offenbach County (OF)
  • Kreis Gross-Gerau County (GG)

2,710,127 inhabitants live in the region thus delimited, with a total of 4,305 square kilometers (as of December 31, 2018). The Frankfurt City Region is also part of the much larger FrankfurtRheinMain Metropolitan Region (5.7 million inhabitants).

The largest city in the metropolitan area is Frankfurt having 763,000 inhabitants (2019). However, this is still relatively small compared to other cities.
